The North Forsyth Raiders 5A hockey team just returned from the Gulf Coast. The players, coaches and several parents spent a weekend in October working for Habitat for Humanity in Mobile, Alabama. While there, the team worked hard to clean the construction debris of 11 homes for Habitat for Humanity. They also participated in digging and clearing drainage ditches and laid six pallets of sod.

The team stayed the weekend at a bunkhouse outside of Mobile called Camp Christian. The trip was coordinated with the help of Meredith Hoit of Habitat for Humanity www.habitatmobile.org. After working hard on the job site, the team traveled a few miles down to the Gulf Coast to witness the left-over devastation from Hurricane Katrina.

“I was shocked to see how bad it still is down there a year later. And we didn’t even make it to New Orleans. They still need our help,” said captain Jon Ryerse. “I couldn’t believe how on one street it looked totally normal, and then the next needed a bulldozer. I’m just glad we could help and I am already looking forward to our next trip down there.”

The North Forsyth Raiders compete in the Georgia High School Association’s most competitive division. Games are played at The Cooler in Alpharetta and at the SGAA facility in Snellville, GA.

Players on the team include co-captains Jon Ryerse and Jeff Hudson, assistant captain Joe Gilbo, as well as Adam Dohm, James Ryerse, Kyle Britt, Radley Britt, Chris Pittman, and Kevin Sclafani. The Raiders are currently in first place in GHRA 5A hockey with a 2-0 record after beating Brookwood 6-3 and Lassiter 8-4.
