Local impact numbers for the recently-completed 2006 Ford Tour de Georgia were released this week, and the impact on the Cumming/Forsyth County area was nearly $2.1 million. The Cumming-Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce-sponsored the event was held in conjunction with the annual Taste of Forsyth event that took place at the City of Cumming Fairgrounds, adjacent to the Cumming stage start line for the Ford Tour de Georgia race. This year marked the very first time Cumming served as a Staged Start locale and Staged Sprint Line host.
“Our bid to host a staged start was based on the ideal match of a professional sporting event with the opportunity to showcase the beauty and diversity of our local area,” said James McCoy, Chamber President and CEO. “These numbers indicate that we made the right decision, not only for the awareness we brought to our community but also for the Tour’s economic impact overall.”
Local impact assessments were based on an average of overall spectators of the 2006 Ford Tour de Georgia for the week-long event, which amounted to more than 500,000 guests.
The economic impact for the state of Georgia and its host cities is based on individuals who responded to the intercept survey at specific sites, who stated that they were present to watch the Tour and were from out-of-state. This is important to note, as individuals who are Georgia residents could have conceivably spent money in the state regardless of the Tour. Spending categories included food and beverage, local transportation, retail, recreation and lodging. The study found that lodging and food/beverage accounted for close to 55% of the total direct impact numbers;
