Cumming GA,  11/17/11:

Former sheriff department employee Duane Piper announced that he is running for sheriff while speaking to the Forsyth County Tea Party.   Piper will challenge incumbent Forsyth County Sheriff Ted Paxton in the 2012 Republican primary.  During his comments to the Tea Party, Piper focused on his plan to control the Forsyth County Sheriff department’s budget by reducing spending and increasing accountability.

Tea Party members stayed true to form and questioned Piper for several minutes, focusing mainly on spending and budgetary issues. The question of the size and scope of the sheriff’s vehicle fleet came up several times. Piper was careful to say that under his watch, the sheriff department would complete an annual budget and fully disclose expenses.

Stay tuned for complete video coverage of Piper’s announcement speech which will be aired on CummingHome.com Friday night.

Thank goodness a good candidate has stepped forward to defeat this egomaniacal, big-spending sheriff. Duane Piper is well respected among his peers and will give Paxton strong opposition. Good luck Lt. Piper.

I suspect Duane will have an easy triumph. Sheriff Paxton does not perform the job of a Constitutional Officer, he performs the job of a Police Chief. This is what a Sheriff should be doing;

As a retired Leo I speak with a lot of our deputies and It seems that our sheriff's department has a lot of issues with the way employees are treated and even in this economy they are leaving in droves. I know some of you will say they should be happy to have a job, but if their morale is low their performance is low and our crime goes up. Please speak with a deputy when you see them and let's take care of the people that take care of us with our vote.

DM: Maybe talking to those FCSO employees he helped to set up and fire for Paxton might get you a totally different opinion of Piper.

Al Sutton: It is important for people to be happy in their jobs and they are free to pursue other employment.

I take one exception to your comment. Crime will NOT go up if their morale is low. Solving crime or catching the criminal may take more time, but crime will not increase due to their performance.

The Deputies that investigate crime and stop people for unsafe driving are to be commended.

I also believe that Sheriff Paxton would have been a far more effective Sheriff had he focused his energy on being a Sheriff instead of a Police Chief.

The basis for that remark is the fact that the less active officers are, the less self initiated activity the engage in the less drugs the get from traffic stops, the less thieves the find with stolen property etc. Therefore those individuals are left on the street longer to continue with their current criminal activity. Hence I said crime, not criminals. The more time on the street the more crime.

David, perhaps the deputies Duane helped Paxton to fire deserved to be fired. Paxton wastes millions of taxpayer dollars each year and, as you yourself have pointed out, is unfit to hold the office.
