Herman Cain Wins Straw Poll at Cumming Country Fair and Festival

Who will be our great nation’s next President? Just within the Republican Party, 10 candidates have come forward to be weighed and measured by the American people. The key question on everyone’s minds is ‘are they fit to carry out this most ultimate duty to country?’

To help gauge local thoughts to this all-important question, the Forsyth County Republican Party (FCRP) conducted an informal straw poll at the annual Cumming Country Fair and Festival – held from October 6 – 16, 2011. All 10 candidates recognized by the Federal Elections Commission (FEC) for the Republican Nomination for President as of Thursday October 6, 2011 were included in the poll. These candidates had filed with the FEC to raise or expend funds in order to campaign for the nomination.

During the Fair, this straw poll allowed the Forsyth County Republic Party to not only assess the sentiments of fair patrons, but also engage in enlightening discussions about all the candidates running for the Presidency on the Republican platform. Furthermore, this effort provided an opportunity for people to share thoughts and ideas about conservative concerns and issues. A total of 345 votes were collected, of which three were disqualified for double votes. Of the remaining 342 votes, the results are as follows for 8 of the 10 candidates:

  • Herman Cain                  255 Votes            73.91%
  • Newt Gingrich                   21 Votes             6.09%
  • Michele Bachmann            8 Votes              2.32%
  • Jon Huntsman                    1 Vote               0.29%
  • Ron Paul                            8 Votes             2.32%
  • Rick Perry                         20 Votes            5.80%
  • Mitt Romney                      24 Votes            6.96%
  • Rick Santorum                    3 Votes             0.87%

Two of the candidates officially on the ballot (Gary Johnson and Buddy Roemer) did not receive any votes.   In addition, Sarah Palin received two write-in votes although she has announced she has no intention of seeking the nomination.

This straw poll presented interesting insights regarding the thoughts of local residents at this time. As the election is just over a year out and the candidates work to share their messages through various venues, the FCRP plans to conduct more polls to stay on pulse with the views of the local electorate.  The second FRCP poll will be held next month at the National BBQ Cup event in Forsyth County which will be held from November 18th to 19th.

We have seen tax reform candidates before and we still have the income tax. If Cain wants to be president he had better come up with something better than that 9-9-9.

It pains me that all Republican candidates, save one, simply want to tinker with the tax systems rather than cut spending. Only one Ron Paul wants to cut $1.0 trillion and simply brings us back to 2008 spending.

Cain is no different that Romney, Perry, Santorum, or Bachmann that are perfectly happy to participate in big government as lone as its Republican big government.

Very disturbing interview of Herman Cain. In this interview Herman reveals that he would keep in place the size and scope of the federal government.

"In this interview Herman reveals that he would keep in place the size and scope of the federal government."

Except of course, that he didn't express any such sentiment.

We are given two ears and one mouth so that we might listen first before we speak.

Oh Bill, Please concentrate on the message from H.C. I went to the Forsyth Tea party last [K]night and had an education on the proposed Fairtax issue and indicatiions of the 9 9 9 future. Anything is better then a ''gun down'' the citizens throat by the I.R.S., And by the way, the I.R.S. IS THE BIGGEST PROBLEM WE HAVE IN CASE YOU NOT HEARD. You have good Karma.

Please slowdown, I got your back here and together like minds get stronger.

Herman's exact comments is that RP wants to throw the baby out with the bath water. Well ... OK ... throw out the Department of Energy baby, the Department of Education baby, HHS baby... throw out all the unconstitutional departments that are the bane of our existence.

Herman's plan is unconstitutional and unworkable.

  1. There is no provision for a national sales tax in the constitution.

  2. It should be 9-9-9-9 plan because it does away with corporate payroll exclusions.

Besides he changed his plan two days ago to now give a pass so that 47% of the people who don't pay taxes, to continue NOT to pay taxes.

Eddie ... there is no difference in consumption tax and income tax. You can consumption tax or fair tax at a level equal to theft and an income tax. Don't be fooled by the FairTax rhetoric. A consumption tax is not necessarily better than an income tax. It is the total level of taxation that is key.

"There is no provision for a national sales tax in the constitution."

Spare me from the sophomoric "There's no provision in the Constitution for . . ." arguments. This is the usual argument from people who read the Constitution without understanding the Constitution. There's no provision in the Constitution for Medicare, welfare, education, the Air Force, Social Security, etc., etc., etc.

The Constitution doesn't detail specifics on what the government CAN do, it describes the LIMITS of government; not in specific terms, but in generalities.

There is nothing more dangerous than a zealot who doesn't know what he's talking about. Nothing.

While tax reform is important, the more urgent problem is spending. What's Herman's plan to cut spending??? I haven't heard one. Ron Paul is the only one who has a specific plan to cut $1 trillion. He of course wants to reform the tax code as well, but again, spending is the urgent issue. 9-9-9 is revenue neutral, and without a spending cut plan, we can only assume spending will remain at current levels since he still takes in the same amount of money to run the current government. Same spending, different tax code...problem not solved. Herman does well in GA because of his prior radio show, but I would argue very little would change under his presidency. The only real change will come from Ron Paul. That's simply the truth.

Except Ron Paul has about as much of a chance to be President as I have of becoming the Pope.

And I suggest you actually do some research on Herman Cain's stance on spending before you make such a claim.

Dave,

That's because republican voters are content to vote for the status quo...and I foresee even the tea partiers who tout limited government doing the same. Ron Paul has polled well against a Obama in a head to head matchup.

I have looked at Herman's stance. He of course says he wants to cut spending, as does EVERY candidate, but where's his specific plan??? His campaign website doesn't list specifics. In his own words in the video in this string, he indicates he wants to reform rather than do away with. According to his campaign advisors, a plan is coming soon. We'll see I guess. But if he develops a detailed plan for tax reform, but not spending cuts, that's an obvious indication of where his priorities are. Not that tax reform isn't important, it's just not as urgent as our spending problem.

"There's no provision in the Constitution for Medicare, welfare, education, the Air Force, Social Security, etc., etc., etc."

True statement David Richard.

"The Constitution doesn't detail specifics on what the government CAN do, it describes the LIMITS of government; not in specific terms, but in generalities."

WRONG. The Constitution tells the federal government what it can do. Read Article 1, Section 8. The Bill of Rights tells the federal government what it can't do.

David Richard. You are good at wonkish stuff and would be valuable as an accountant advisor to almost any operation; I admit this wholeheartily. But your head is screwed on so upside down about republicanism, governance, and the role of government you're dangerous. The voters in District 4 probably recognized this and voted in Patrick Bell instead of you.

You are much better suited to being a wonk accountant in the government bureaucracy rather than being someone who directs the bureaucracy.

Nothing shameful about that.

"Ron Paul has polled well against a Obama in a head to head matchup."

Not in any serious poll, and not for any extended period of time, Brandon.

And Bill, I've actually governed, and governed well. In a real, live, government. I've had to try to put constitutional theories into actual practice. How about you?

David Richard. Mayor of Owltown; is that OK.
