Forsyth County Residents Able to Learn About Proposed New Water Rate Structure

A proposed new tiered rate structure is aimed at water conservation, and Forsyth County is one of the greatest outdoor water users in the metro Atlanta area...

A cost of service and rate study was recently conducted by the Forsyth County Water and Sewer Department, the results of which include a proposed new tiered rate structure. Residents will have the opportunity to learn more about this study and the possible rate changes at an upcoming public hearing.

During the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners regular meeting and public hearings on February 2, the findings of the study will be presented, as will the potential new rate structure. The new structure would transition from a uniform rate currently charged to all county water customers to a variable rate corresponding to the amount of usage. Those consuming greater amounts of water would pay a higher per gallon rate. Therefore, some customers may see a decrease in their monthly water bill while others may see an increase.

The proposed rate system is aimed at conserving water, as Forsyth County is one of the greatest outdoor water users in the metro Atlanta area. The Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) is requiring all counties to implement a water rate structure that promotes water conservation.

If approved, the new rate structure could go into effect in late spring or early summer.
