Due to recent ground slippage along Ronald Reagan Parkway, the section of the roadway between the intersections with Pendley Road and North Old Atlanta Road will be closed temporarily.
District 1 Commissioner Charles Laughinghouse met with officials of Lafarge on Sunday afternoon to determine the extent of the problem. It was explained that a layer of rock extending from the west side of Ronald Reagan Parkway into the quarry area has exhibited several inches of slippage over the past 48 hours.
The slippage is apparent in several cracks that have appeared in the roadway. Engineers and geologist employed by Lafarge are investigating the extent of the problem and will be installing instruments to monitor both the magnitude and rate of slippage.
Until these preliminary steps are complete and a better understand of the problem is obtained, it is recommended that this section of the parkway remain closed to traffic until at least Wednesday morning. Highway 9 between North Old Atlanta Road and Pendley Road is the logical detour route around the problem area.
