Join Charlie Smith at Backyard Burger

Forsyth County Commission Candidate Charlie Smith will be in the July 4th parade, and wants folks to come to the recently re-opened Backyard Burgers on Highway 20 just east of Cumming (near Publix) for $1 burgers after the parade.

“It will give me a chance to talk to folks and hear what’s on their mind” Smith said while enjoying a burger at Backyard Burgers recently.  “So much of campaigning is the candidate talking to people and it is also important for voters to get a chance to tell their candidate what is on their mind, what’s important to them, and what the county can do to improve” he continued.

Charlie is running for District 2 County Commission seat against incumbent Brian Tam, among other opponents.  “I contrast myself from Commissioner Tam in several ways”, Charlie explained; “first, the incumbent owns a restaurant he leases from the City of Cumming.  I think this takes a significant amount of time and he does not spend the time necessary working for the citizens of the county.  There is too much going on in Forsyth County for commissioners not to be fully engaged in the matters of the county.  Secondly, I have no conflicts with property I own or operate, or those with special interests.  My supporters are individual voters and small business owners here in Forsyth and contribute in small sums and in-kind to my campaign; I have no allegiance to huge contributors or special interests.

Somehow the incumbent managed to spend over $70,000 against his opponent’s $4,000 during the last election, and if you look around, you’ll see he is spending huge sums again.  One has to wonder where all the money is coming from.”

“I’m running on a platform with three main initiatives”, Smith concluded.  “First, I worked on the SPLOST VI selection committee, and as a commissioner I can continue to get the intersections improved and roads widened that our committee told the Board of commissioners were the most important transportation improvements needed in our county.  Second, Peachtree Parkway from John’s Creek to 400 must not be allowed to morph into another Jimmy Carter Boulevard or Roswell Road, and that will be a priority of mine.  Finally, we must have attractive commercial enterprise in Forsyth County to keep our property taxes where they are, and I will work to craft an economic engine that will do just that for decades to come.”

For more information, go to www.charliesmith08.com, or come by Backyard Burgers between noon and 1:30 after the parade on July 4th, and ask Charlie about his candidacy and what he would like to do for our county as your commissioner.

SPLOST 6

Jim Boff... DIDN'T EVEN SERVE HIS OWN DISTRICT!!!

Serving on the committee are Jim Boff (District 1 representative); Charles I. Smith (District 2 representative); Bob Charles (District 3 representative); Charles Cantrell (District 4 representative); Ernest Turner (District 5 representative); Tracy Moon (Cumming-Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce representative); and John Manton (senior community representative).

Mr. Waddell, Congratulations on becoming the Pam Bowman of Campaign 2008 (aka the city's patsy). Up until this article you had my respect but not my vote. Now with this sort of ridiculous attempt to instigate some negative campaign against an honest candidate, you don't have either. The appointees on this committee do not have to represent a particular district. They are just the type of citizens who care enough to make the time to get involved. I notice that your name is not there for ANY district. I respect the position you hold as a firefighter, and therefore am shocked at this sort of juvenile attack on Jim Boff for making the time to serve this county.

I’m not sure why the comment about Jim Boff by his opponent is posted in response to this article, but since it is, I’ll respond since I was a member of the committee referred to by the writer.

Each commissioner appointed one person to serve on the SPLOST VI Transportation Project Selection Committee (the Committee), in addition to one from the Chamber of Commerce and one to represent senior interests. This was the make-up of this committee as the Board of Commissioners chose to craft it. There was no requirement that commissioners appoint someone from his or her own district, and there were 2 appointees not made by the commissioner in their district: Jim Boff, who resides in District 5 was appointed from the District 1 commissioner and Earnest Turner who resides in District 2 was appointed by the commissioner from District 4. Therefore, of the 7 of us, 4 were not appointed from within their districts.

During our first meeting, one of the things we tried to contemplate and guard against was any one of us engaging in presenting “pet projects”, or putting the interests of one area above another. It is my recollection that as a group we rose above that and considered everything put before us as objectively as possible. It is difficult to be knowledgeable about all of the roads and intersections in the county, and we all benefitted from other committee members’ specific knowledge that was freely contributed by all.

The writer obviously missed these aspects of this committee in his posting. And to imply that any of the Committee members failed in their duty is demeaning.

My comments... I did not mean to sling any mud earlier. I never meant to offend anyone or hurt anyones feelings. I saw that information on a web page and would of liked to know how to serve on a committee and it not be in the district you live in. Which were answered by Boff and Smith. Some of the other comments got spun way out of control and some were not signing their name and I said somethings I am embarressed about... I want to apoligize to you Jim Boff for those comments - I AM SORRY!!!

Charlie, you are a true gentleman. Thank you so much for your explanation of the issue in question. I also wanted to say that I am very glad that your Back Yard Burger event after the Parade was such a huge success.
