I read a letter to the FCN editor on 6/15/08 applauding Brian Tam’s “leadership” on the SPLOST VI agreement. I couldn’t disagree more. Brian Tam, with 3 accomplices, further eroded the trust people have in the sanctity of their ballot. The voters approved a SPLOST VI ballot that had percentages very clearly spelled out between the city and county. A judge upheld the split despite finding flaws with the projects listed. Four of our five commissioners eroded the people’s trust in the ballot by deciding not to remedy the issue with a new ballot measure or appealing the judge’s ruling to leave the approved ballot in tact. Though that course would have delayed the new tax and projects for a few months (thereby sparing our wallets a bit longer), it would have preserved the right of the people to not have the rules of the game changed after they had spoken. A rational person can rightly question, “Why should I vote? They’ll do what they want regardless of what I say.” I believe that preserving the ballot is far more important than a road project’s expediency.
To commend Brian Tam for his “leadership” in brokering a deal heavily in the favor of the city of Cumming is ridiculous. Brian Tam earns his living off of the city of Cumming with his restaurant enjoying a sweetheart of a deal given by the mayor’s blessing. Even so, he has never recused himself from any votes before the county commission involving the city and has routinely voted in the city’s favor. The fact that no reputable news source has investigated this is beyond me. His own party filed an ethics complaint against him 2 years ago, and he was once under fire for using his county vehicle for his catering business. Please don’t tell us about Brian Tam’s “leadership”. We can’t afford it any longer.

10-4 Chris. Could not have said it better.
Chris Goldston has no credibility whatsoever. He has been caught telling a big fat lie about HIS candidate. He should have been smarter that that.
People can't trust a word that man says.
Sorry, Chris, but I couldn't disagree more wth you.
To say: " The voters approved a SPLOST VI ballot that had percentages very clearly spelled out between the city and county" is misleading.
Poll the voters and you will discover that 90% of them can't tell you what the split was.
Chairman Laughinghouse and Harrell did exactly the right thing. Had they not worked out an agreement that a super majority of Board members agreed to they would have placed the Taubman development at risk. The project represents half a billion dollars in tax revenue to this county. That's billion with a B.
Half a billion dollars can build and/or imporve a lot of roads, schools and parks.
What we can't afford any more of is your friend, the anti-business Dave Richard who would would have rolled the dice on a court appeal and lost half a billion dollars that this county sorely needs.
Last month, the inconsistent Mr. Richard took credit for single handedly turning the Chamber of Commerce into the effective organization it is today.
Yesterday, he threatened to cut the Chamber's funding in retaliation for their support of the SPLOST agreement.
Incidentally, he was the only commissioner to vote not to sewer The Avenue Forsyth. If he had had his way that development would never have opened in Forsyth County.
No. The anti-business Dave Richard is what this county can no longer afford.
Debra,
First of all, stay on topic. It was not about me.
But since you made it about me, let's correct the litany of lies you just posted, like any typical Bell supporter does when trying to prop up their useless candidate.
One: I don't believe you even polled any voters, so your first claim is, as usual, false.
Two: The appeal would have taken 10 minutes and been entirely in our favor.
Three: I never took credit for turning the Chamber into an effective organization. That is your boy Bell's spin on what I actually said. I said that I was responsible for making sure they were accountable to the citizens for the money we gave them. That they turned into a more effective organization was a small by-product of my efforts, but they were never held accountable before I came along. Now they are.
Four: I threatened the Chamber's future funding for their politically-based ad in local newspapers, not for their role or support in appeasing the mayor on SPLOST.
Five: I never voted not to sewer the Avenue Forsyth project. As usual, that is another lie on your part and is par for the course for you and other Bell supporters. I voted against the water and sewer fund giveaway and the variance to the Tree Ordinance rearding the Avenue Forsyth project. They could have had all the sewer they needed, they just needed to pay for it, just like everyone else.
You need to really undertand reality befoe you come after me. You'll just look foolish, like your candidate.
And does your support of Tam mean that your boy Bell is supporting Tam? That will also add more votes to me if that is the case.
Hello bewildered by a liar, I am not a true fan of Chris , but you need not call anybody names and try to start trouble.
At least he got his point accross to a lot of people his way and it worked.
And the splost issue was as disfunctional as ever. NON DISCLOSURE IS THE PROBLEM.
Dave Richard,
So I did my own poll...... 100% can say they do not have any idea where the money is going.
Would you like to come with me someday and poll with me? We can go where you want to poll so you cannot say it was fixxxxed.
Deal or no deal.
Way to go S.M.J. and Debra.
Thank you, Terry Sweeney
dear bewildered, what candidate are you referring to? if it's the current local GOP chairman, chris ;ublically apologized for that a long time ago...an integrity that tam has not shown. and, yes, he can be trusted - as a conservative republican who stands for such.... if you're not a true conservative republican, then we understand your delirium. bewildered, you are mean.
dear debra, chris stated that the voters approved the SPLOST that clearly stated the split -- it's not his fault that the voters don't read the ballot as to what the SPLOST stated. the SPLOST has been approved every year -- people who don't care what it says, but have been conditioned to vote for supposed 'improvements' via our tax dollars. now, me, i never vote for tax increases! so, debra, do not accuse chris for the voters' stupidity, nor for any assumed support of any candidate.
lastly, tam is unethical. period. and a liar. period. and mean... bewildered, is that you? he will even *itch at a woman who has not done anything to him. THAT is what i deem uncalled for and mean. we don't treat women like that where i come from. we don't want mean and unethical - we've had enough! just because you like his food from his restaurant that pays HARDLY any rent to the CITY (hello?!!), doesn't mean you have to vote for him.
Me? Mean? Not really. Except I can't stand a liar. I try to be nice to everyone else. I am nice to elderly people, kids, and animals.
Not Conservative? No, not that either. I actually have a pretty conservative background, except I do try to stay out of other people's bedrooms and think the government should too.
And I don't recall saying anything at all about Brian Tam, but since you mentioned it, the food at his place is pretty good.
What I said is that Chris Goldston is a liar and cannot be trusted. There is just nothing I hate more than a liar.
Am I clear enough for ya??
I don't know if Mr Goldston is a liar or not. What I do know is that his comments on the recent tax assessment adjustments were factually incomplete and misleading. Regarding the recent splost issue it was clear that someone had to introduce good old common sense into the discussion. Mr Tam did that and the county is better off.
Mr. Sweeney and Debra, your statements that 100% of the people you polled did not know where the $$$ from SPLOST was going and that 90% didn't know the split troubles me. The two of you are implying that the voters of Forsyth County ignorantly or stupidly cast their votes without reading ballots or researching issues. I find it hard to believe that we have a county full of voting boobs considering all I hear lately is that we are the 13th most affluent county in the nation.
And Mr. Sweeney, are these ignorant voters the same ones that you wish to vote you into office?
I cannot recite to you the projects listed for SPLOST VI, but i do know that improving the infrastructure in the county is its purpose. Can you and Debra recite them all to me? Without reading from a list? C'mon folks, let's be real here.
