To the Editor:

I just wanted to provide some additional background to your article of June 19th, 2008, regarding the settlement with Mr. Dewey White over the issue known as the “S” curve of Mathis Airport Road.  I was dismayed that your article failed to capture the degree of community uproar, and involvement, in this matter.  This was the vanguard of future battles over controlling the development of the Highway 141 corridor – battles that ultimately led to the overlay district we now enjoy.  It was one of the first in recent memory where the concerns of the local citizens actually drove a county governmental decision.

Your article failed to note the extensive involvement of Smart Growth Forsyth County, Inc. and the then new commissioner, Brian Tam, who worked hard to facilitate the numerous public meetings on this issue.  These were highly contentious and often quite colorful as Mr. White’s attorney presented in the face of strong community opposition.  And finally, your article failed to touch at the heart of the issue – the difficult but necessary tension between the “rights” of a land owner to sell or develop their property at highest value (or in this case, to receive compensation for a taking), the clear bias of the local courts to support these “rights” (perhaps a reason that 1.3M became 4.3M?), and the permanent, enduring, and many times negative, impacts that affording those rights without temperance can bring to the quality of life of the communities that surround these properties.

Respectfully,

Bob Slaughter
Founder, Smart Growth Forsyth County, Inc.

Excuse me if I sound ignorant but how does costing 3million dollars to the taxpayers equate to the "negative, impacts that affording those rights without temperance can bring to the quality of life of the communities that surround these properties."

This road is off 141 and was clearly a matter of not wanting Target and Wal mart to be connected thus benefitting Mr. White's development(flow of traffic) rather than "concern" for neighboring sub divisions.

As the founder of Smart Growth Forsyth County, would you care to comment on the fact that Jerry Wickliffe -- the moderator for both SGFC debates --intentionally lied to one of the candidates and that he is a convicted felon who plead guilty to bid rigging in 2000?

Just so we're clear that Wicliffe did lie, here is a copy of an email he sent the day before the last debate. (It took me a week to get permission to reprint the email here, but I felt it was important that the public see just how unprincipled Wickliffe and SGFC are.

This is an enquiry e-mail via http://www.teambell.org from: jerry wickliffe co_wickliffe@bellsouth.net

I understand that you think I cannot remain unbiased in this last debate. I certainly don't want any candidate to think I am biased towards one candidate as opposed to another. I am as a private citizen not a member of Smart Growth going to vote for certain candidates. I want this debate to be fair and not seen as biased so I will not be the moderator. I think as I am a former Eagle Scout I would want this debate as fair as possible.

Does SGFC condone having its moderator lie to a candidate? If not, why have Claudia Castro and SGFC not issued an apology to Patrick Bell?

Having an ex-con moderate its debates calls into question SGFC judgement and credibility.

And Debra, just so we know that Patrick Bell's Clean Campaign Pledge is simply more hot air from your candidate, why don't you tell us in what capacity you serve on the Bell Campaign?

Your holier than thou act is getting very, very lame. Can't anyone on the Bell Campaign tell the truth?

David, you can't handle the truth.

But here goes: You lied when you said the county is "this close" to getting a water permit;

Your "friend" and supporter Jerry Wickliffe was caught up in the Bill Campbell corruption scandal and plead guilty to bid rigging AND he lied to your opponent when he sent him an email that said he would not moderate the SGFC debate.

You were wrong when you said the city's SPLOST VI lawsuit against the county would be laughed out of court. When it was over, the city was laughing AT YOU!

You were wrong when you voted to sue the Corps of Engineers and said it would only take 10 minutes in Federal Court. It will take months if not years, cost taxpayers hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars. And in the end THE COUNTY WILL LOSE! Thanks for wasting our hard-earned dollars.

You lied when you said you do not support special interests. Your nose is so far up SGFC and Bethel Park's butt you have forgotten you live in north Forsyth. North Forsyth voters won't forget, however.

How much more "truth" can you handle?

Debra,

Pay attention.

Let's clear up a big mistake you and other Bell supporters have made (among supporting your candidate, for one).

I never said the suit against the Corps would be settled in 10 minutes in court. That was one of you Bell supporters making yet another mistake. I said the appeal on the SPLOST litigation would have taken 10 minutes to settle in court.

Yet another lie that the Bell campaign is spreading on Dave Richard.

Makes that clean campaign promise look like sewer water.

David,

You also said the city's case would be laughed out of Superior Court. How did that work out for you?
