After viewing the Commission candidate debates on Cumminghome.tv, it is bothersome to me to hear several candidates talk about how they believe they are best qualified simply because they are retired. As a retired member of our community myself, I do not believe I am automatically more qualified to serve.
Does this mean if I am a candidate with small children I should not run? Or, if I am a business owner or have a job or I participate in charitable endeavors I am not qualified to run? We might be missing out on some pretty good people if we eliminate candidates that aren't retired! The justification and basis for this argument is not sound.
I believe having someone that is ACTIVE in our community is a better qualification. I prefer to see leadership left to members of our community that have fresh, new ideas and that are involved and engaged in our community. This position is not a hobby. It's not something to do when you are bored. I believe voters should and will reject the premise that being retired is an automatic qualification for running for office.

Retired means that the person running has the time to dedicate to the position. It also means being able to be available to the folks of this county when THEY need YOU and not your assistant.
Why narrow the field of candidates with this retired statement. Working class people with families are good folks and can still find time to serve their community it is done each and every day.
"Retired" means you do not have 'obligations' to anyone who is funding your business! Also, from factual research, the 'retired' IS EXTREMELY ACTIVE AS A VOLUNTEER IN MANY ORGANIZATIONS IN THE COMMUNITY even before retirement. To me, that beats having a business any day.
I find this post refreshing and thank Mr. Richardson for pointing this out. Boff was pretty outspoken when he said Julie should not be running as she has kids at home, or something to that effect.
That was a sexist and arrogant remark! Vote for Julie!
Missy T
I recall Ms. Tressler saying that her number 1 priority would be to the commission or something to that effect at the closing speeches at the Smart Growth Forum. Where does that leave her children? I believe that is a rather telling remark. I know I had to watch that part of the debates again just to make sure that was what I heard. Check it out on cumminghome.com. Just to let you know too, Jim Boff has children and his wife has worked, gone to school and worked for charities and many other organizations, with the full support of her husband. Never have I heard Jim speak in an arrogant or sexist way because if I had, I would have heard about it from my obvious better half. The voters have a better Citizens choice with Jim Boff.
BOFF - Best One For Forsyth
You're right, Missy. What an incredibly sexist remark. Boff's assertion that Julie shouldn't run because she has children at home was insulting to all women. Boff's caveman attitude should not be excused.
Stop the Threat wouldn't know a sexist remark if it bit him in the posertior. And his assertion Julie's statement that the BOC would be her No. 1 priority means it would take precedence over her children is just plain ridiculous.
She had just gone through a long list of civic organizations and boards she had been appointed to and she was pointing out the BOC would take precedence over them. Not her family. If she had been a male, nobody would have questioned that.
stop the threat, why is it you try and split hairs and look for all these hidden meanings.
I don't think anyone with a grain of sense would have thought she mant that the BoC would come before her children. What an idiotic statement.
You are part of the problem we have in Forsyth County...you are trying to make Julie look bad by pulling out one statement and attempting to make some valid point for your candidate. The days of this nonsnese are almost over!
When Boff said she should not run because she is a mother, it was sexist and arrogant. Don't even try and defend it because you know it is. And if you do think it was ok, then you are further helping me prove Boff and supporters and not a good choice.
In fact, he is so cocky (because of his support, I suppose) he did not talk to me last time I saw him. He looked right through me.
I see the Carters lugging all his crap around and he shows up at the last minute like he is the governor or something. And they are still trying to run a business and cover all the activities. Way too cocky for me!
Where was he on the night of the Bald Ridge Lodge fund raiser? Other candidates were there. I saw Charlie Smith, Brian Tam, Julie Tressler and Patrick Bell all running around helping this great organization. Were the Carters too busy to go do it for him? Was Laughinghouse busy and could not go wave signs and be his cheerleader? I guess this was not a high visiblity function so it did not matter for him to be there.
In addition, Boff is too close to the special interst groups and I think that is bad for the county as a whole.
He may be a nice guy but his it not at all what's needed in a commissoner. He needs to stay with his lake people, the golf course savers and smart growth, not on the Board of Commissioners. Sorry, but it's the way I feel.
Missy T says - "You are part of the problem we have in Forsyth County...you are trying to make Julie look bad by pulling out one statement and attempting to make some valid point for your candidate."
Boy, it's a good thing no one else does anything like that in any OTHER campaign! (For Bell supporters, that would mean - you)
Misst T don't try to reason with stop the threat. This person stlye is to bully and attack anyone with a different opinion. Stop the threat remains me of some of the Bell supports and their postings.
When you mention retired people being better suited for office, one thing I would consider is what they did before they retired, and whether they earned enough money to support themselves through retirement.
Mike Busse worked at Publix, and "retired" in his 40's. This doesn't make sense to me. Unless he is independently wealthy, I am concerned as to how he plans to support his family and put two children through college.
This sounds an alarm that no one riding the "big ol Bus" seems to want to answer.
Doug,
Why do you care how an individual plans to support his family? What business is it of yours anyway how Mike Busse plans to support his family?
Here's a thought. . . whay don't you keep your nose out of everyone else's private business, and worry about their commissioner platform?
doug, why does it concern you? how do you know what the retired candidates have in their personal coffers? why do you care about their kids' college education? come on. quit grasping at straws. the bigger question is how does someone (tam) get away with only paying $2500/mo rent/utilities to the city and not recuse himself from city-vs-county votes? hello? the lights are on, but no one's home..
I'm concerned because I believe that someone in their 40's with kids to feed and no job would be more inclined to look at the commissioner's job as more of a money-maker and less of a public service.
There is something that is just odd about a man who "retires" in his 40s from a job that could not have possibly paid him enough to have adequate savings in retirement to live, much less to put 2 kids through school.
Ignore the oddity if you wish, but that doesn't mean the rest of the people don't see it.
Hate to clue you in, Doug, but at $36k a year, this job ain't no money-maker.
LOL, DR. It's not an oddity, doug. it's just that 'the rest of the people' that you speak for don't have anything else to bark about. 'retired at a young age' has 'unethical practices' beat any day; and for those who don't see that one, then perhaps the moral compass of our community truly is growing more sour than anyone thought. sorry, but most of us just can't take the degradation anymore.
DR... dumb *ss reply as usual... so let me explain
If your in your 40's and retiring from a Job that could not possibly afford you a comfortable retirement, it leaves you open for "kickbacks". That's what I thougt when I heard Bussee was retiring and running.. and by the way he didn't retire... it was a "mutual" parting of the ways.
Plus Bussee fiqured w/ Harel behind him he was a shoo in. They promised him the "commish" job this time if he ran.... I rather have Tam back in there to keep it spicy and mix things up.
Understand ? DR.....LOL
Linda,
If you can provide proof that Mr. Busse does NOT already have a comfortable retirement or that it was a mutual parting of the ways, I might begin to believe your crap, but you can't because you don't know a thing about Mr. Busse.
And based upon your previous posts on this site, you don't know a lot about anything else, either.
Are you sure you're not Debra, and just posting under another name?
Thank you Linda. Glad to see that you get it.
No one "retires" from Publix at 40-something unless they have something else lined up.
Retired sounds like a very good qualification -- for David Richard!
I think he may have retired for butchering deer down there at the Publix...and then storing it with the food you and I buy.
Busse and Richard, what a great combo. Like Laurel and Hardy, in a nightmare.
One booming, "I'm a red blooded American, you can't talk to me like that Mr Gravitt!"
The other flinging his arms around, scrawny fingers pointing everywhere, foaming at the mouth screeching..."dictator, extortionsist...oh you mean little man!"
LOL...just a funny thought! Wait there's more!
And Ron Seder gimping along..."Go, boys, go! Get him! He beat me so bad my left cheek still aches!"
And Charlie following up the rear..."my votes, damn it Ron, I need those two to vote on something for me!", "They owe it to me!" "Where's Boff!?!? Get him back here now! He can't stop the dogs from going poopy on the grass! I got him here too and I he owes me his vote!"
And Jim sitting off to the side, quietly trying to add up the costs and make an analysis of the whole situation. What's the cost of those two votes now that Ron has incited them again and Charlie needs them to push something through. Oh yeah, I guess he wants me to vote on that too!
Just a funny thought about life in Forsyth County! No harm intended. But could be reality if you folks let it!
Jerry, That happened 10 frigging years ago and Busse was NOT the one responsible for that...it was Pat Haroma who was the meat manger at the time. Pat actually lost his job for that!!!
Don't try to sway Jerry, folks, he's a bit off his meds today (and every day).
Jerry, try passing that last rant of yours by a competent psychologist. On second thought, don't - unless you LIKE wearing a straight jacket.
DR
No I'm not Debra..just another woman who doesn't like your politics. I'm the woman you wrote a nasty vial anti semitic letter to.... You chastised me and my people.. we are the chosen people after all....!
I voted for you last time to my great disappointment and hope to see you full time at the outlet malls.. You don't belong in our gov't .. plain and simple.... I had never experienced such disregard and hate by anyone nonetheless of a public official.
Linda,
Stop lying. For lying, you are. There has never, ever, been an anti-semitic letter. Nor have I ever chastised your "people". You are a bitter person who finds attacks and personal slights around each and every corner, and your threats to sue the county commission and bring in the ACLU because we had an invocation at the beginning of each meeting were entirely baseless.
There is no hate for you. Just simple disregard for your pitiful existence which tries to elevate yourself by bringing other people down.
I have it in writing.. and who wants to bring other people down... you. You do it every day on this board and others... You insult long time residents, actually any constituent you can get your foul mouth around. You really need some help. I know of a place that helps people thru therapy and meds. If you want I can recommend a facility. and yes it was an insult... Only you would not see the need to apologize for degrading a whole religion.
Your fellow commissioners responded in kind and did apologize and ask what they could do to help the situation. Tam and Laughinghouse were both polite and professional.
Do you really want me to publish what they wrote and what you wrote me... I think not....
And again you insulted me. You will be stopped... Even now you can't stop but insult me again when you know you were wrong.
A simple apology may have sufficed but I know you can't rise to the occasion.
Linda is telling the absolute truth, folks!
I wish everyone who has ever received an insulting email from "Commissioner" Richard would post it here. Then everyone could plainly see what low regard he has for anyone who disagrees with him.
Well, these folks that are voting Against the YMCA, a christian, non-denominational, faith based organization that provides Youth with opportunities are very short sighted. I call into question Mr. Richard's vote against the Y for very good reason. Why would anyone vote against a Christian Faith Based Community Program and Facility. Can someone PLEASE expalin?
What is the agenda in this town? To initimidate the voters so much with browbeating that we comply and vote for the same people or same kind of people in. NO WAY!!!
Linda, I thought Forsyth County Government was better than that, at least I hoped.
You would think he would get the Message Linda! Have you considered filing a formal complaint, if you have the actual email and all?
Is it just me or has Mr. Richard gone absent from this forum after Linda was going to expose the letter he wrote. After calling her a liar she challenged him and he is long gone.
I would love to know the contents of this letter! I want to know as bad as Mr. Richard wants it to go away.
Linda, You may just want to call the Anti Defamation League and a good Jewish Attorney. For any apologist for Mr. Richard, you are wrong. Wrong for the County. I thought we gave up this garbage back in the 80's? No more apologists for Richard. You might want to send it to the newspaper, like the AJC. Vote Bell, Vote your conscience.

Jerry, Since it is all just LOL here is another funny little scenario. (any similarities to real individuals would be up to you)
Anyone remember the Mr. Bill Show? Well here we go
Mayor Grabbit is holding out all his hands with one holding Splost Dollars, another holding the voters of the county in a vice grip around their neck while holding their water hostage all the while saying " Mine...Mine It's all mine again thanks to my hand picked trio."
Mr. Bam is yelling OOHHH NOOOOOO as Mayor Grabbit pops Mr. Bam's head off and puts it up on his shelf telling Mr. Bam, you don't need it anyway, you never use it and if I gave it back to you, you would just loose it. Now go back across the street and vote the way I told you to. When you are done, you can go back to your Bams Backdoor. If you don't listen to me, you will lose your sweetheart deal.
Mayor. Grabbit says this is too easy as he pops off Linda Ledbetters head and puts it on the shelf next to Marci's. He then takes his 2008 model and pops Julies head on where Linda's had been. He just says "same thing, diferent model." Good Mayor Grabbit finally calls over his Bell Boy. "Good Boy,". He says "You worked against the SPLOST for me,. You spread my misinformation (Pat, Pat) . Now who do you work for? Me? right? Good Boy."
like Jerry said "Just a funny thought about life in Forsyth County! No harm intended. But could be reality if you folks let it!"
Linda, what was the date of your anti-Semitic email from Dave Richard?
I see a very specific pattern against organized religion forming here where David Richard is concerned.

Linda, Stop lying. For lying, you are. There has never, ever, been an anti-semitic letter. Nor have I ever chastised your "people".
David Milum: Hummmm.... where have I heard something similar to this before? Oh yes, and here it is:
http://www.aboutforsyth.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4229
David Milum: Before I got the documents:
The words of Commissioner David Richard; “You have been told by multiple people involved with this matter that Ms. Davis was never, ever spoken to nor corresponded with regarding this matter. You clearly have not bothered to find fact regarding this matter, since you cannot possibly have found anyone associated with this matter that has any evidence that Ms. Davis or I (or anyone on the county commission for that matter) have ever discussed this case.”
David Milum: After I got the documents:
The words of Commissioner David Richard; “Since I never said that I had nothing to do with this issue, I obviously had discussions with Terry Williams, however, they were very short in nature.”
“I never said I didn't have anything to do with the Hansard property issue.”
DM: Well now it seems that our Mr. Richard can't keep up with all his outright lies. My o' my what a coward he is too. How many of these fictitious names on this site are really Dave Richard? Anyone see anything similar to "Darwin" or Livingthenightmare" here?
And for those curious among us, the link I provided has the words of David Richard to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt what a stinking liar Dave Richard is. Remember, no spin, no unnecessary commentary just David Richard's very own words.
Oh and Dave the liar, why is it that you refuse to address your lies that have been documented at http://www.aboutforsyth.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4229
You sure are quiet on this. Come on big mouth let these folks see you for what you are you cowardly little runt. Give us that big ole spin on your own lying words. You have the floor coward. Give us your best shot!
While I don't have a ton of experience in the county political arena, I have seen enough to know that it could be a 24/7 job! When you think of email communications, research, phone calls, meetings with a zillion different people on various issues during the day and in the evenings...this job is one that, frankly, it would seem that a person with no big obligations with a career or young children would be best suited for. I am not making a distinction between male or female here.
