Double Standard? An Example of Hipocrisy Right Here at Home

A Cumming-Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce full page advertisement in the Forsyth County news on June 8, 2008, congratulated the city and four county commissioners for reaching an agreement that gave the city $12.5 million more than county voters approved in the February “SPLOST VI/Green Space Bond” vote.  The ad even emphasized that it was better to give the city most of that $12.5 million anyway.  Hogwash!

The ad advanced the notion that there would be serious consequences if there was a lapse in the county SPLOST collections.  A position in which the Chamber apparently finds comfort now that it is on the side of the mayor receiving more county funds.  The ad also boasted about the many politicians who supported the county give-away.

Where were the Chamber and the politicians when the mayor’s “VOTE NO” SPLOST committee was urging county citizens to defeat the SPLOST VI vote and terminate SPLOST collections?  At that time the Chamber issued no public warnings, nor even publically supported a “yes” SPLOST VI vote.

The city’s SPLOST VI rant has now resulted in the city receiving about 10 percent from the county instead of the 4.29 percent share we approved in our “SPLOST VI/Green Space Bond” vote.

I strongly believe the county made a mistake by not appealing Judge Stone’s technicality decision in favor of the city.  That may or may not have resulted in some delay of SPLOST VI collections.  The delay could have been as long as nine months, but it might also have been zero or a time period of less than nine months.  Of course, a delay would also have reduced the sales tax burden on county citizens.

The city has too long received large unfair shares of the county LOST, SPLOST and water supply revenues.  The county had an opportunity to finally do it right and establish a new reasonable precedent for the city’s share, but the county blew it.

Oh for crying out loud...give it a rest Ron! Everything worked out for the best considering the city won the lawsuit. Now run on and do something constructive.

Ron, it's time to end your personal feud with the mayor and the city. Four of five commissioners did the right thing. Your boy Richard is the only one who failed to grasp the importance of reaching the agreement.

By the way, Richard said he and Board offered the mayor 10% at one point. So what's your beef?

Debra, will you ever get your facts straight?

I was not one of the board members that agreed with the offer of 10%. I simply asked the mayor if he was refusing to to consider the 10% offer, and if he understood that if he refused it, what the consequences were for that refusal.

You can be so dense all the time.

You are, however, a member of the BOC -- at least temporarily.

From your very own website: "(Mayor Gravitt) stated in that very same open meeting that he clearly understood what was being offered, and he declined the 10% offer from us. Not once, not twice, but three specific times."

And you are, however, dense.

When you state that I made an offer, when I clearly did not, and you insist on trying to rationalize your erroneous statement, you become, once again, another liar for the Bell campaign.

But that is par for the course for you and your boy Bell.

I'll do declare Dave. Are you still calling everyone liars? Liar, liar pants on fire.

Lynn,

There is only one way to keep from being branded a liar by me.

Tell the truth.

Something the Bell campaign and his supporters have no experience in doing.

Debra, your posts trouble me more and more. The mayor, as you clearly show, declined the 10% offer. From where I come from that means he did not want it. He wanted more. When the BOC said fine, we will give you what you "legally" deserve, then the voters in the county overwhelmingly agreed (70% if you didn't know), the mayor did not like it. So the beef in the burger here is that four of the five commissioners went against the popular vote. Not to be mean, but do you not understand the facts? (something else to ponder, those same four had to approve the 4.29% in vote).

And before people start on me that I am on Dave Richards team, I don't know the man, have never met him and won't go out of my way to meet him. But c'mon people, what Dave and Ron are saying is dead on.

I live in the county, voted for SPLOST VI fully aware that the city was only getting 4%. Give the rest of the voters in this county some credit that they knowingly cast their ballots.

Mr. Richard.. I think you are the one that needs to be careful on who you label a liar.

Not worried about that in the least, Lynn.
