The bodies of two friends were found Sunday morning submerged in about 10 feet of water near the boat docks of Port Royale on Lake Lanier in Forsyth County.

The two went missing late Saturday evening after a boating accident at the marina. The two have been identified as Lung Mang, 21, of Honor Run in Alpharetta and Tha Thang, 23, of Honor Run in Alpharetta.

Seven other people were passengers on the pontoon boat that the group had rented for the evening. Those seven included the sister and brother of Lung Mang, as well as other relatives and friends of the two young men. One passenger was taken to Northeast Ga. Medical Center in Gainesville Saturday evening for treatment of a cut to his foot. He was treated and released.

The Forsyth County Fire Department’s Dive Team began searching for the two men again this morning around 8:50 a.m. The team recovered the bodies of the men around 10 a.m. They were located near each other in about 10 feet of water, approximately 20 feet from the shoreline of a sandbar.

Thee incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. Saturday. The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol, the Forsyth County Fire Department and the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) responded and began a search and rescue of the area. However, due to it being evening and very dark in the area, the search had to be suspended until this morning.

The accident remains under investigation by DNR.

These are the second and third drowning deaths on Lake Lanier in Forsyth County over the Fourth of July weekend. Another drowning occurred on July 4 at Little Ridge Park. Aeriel Cotuc Chaudjay, 17, of Duluth, drowned while swimming with his uncle and friends.

I witnessed the recovery at Port Royal Marina of the two tragic drowning victims. I would like to comment on the professionalism of the Forsyth County Fire & Sheriff departments especially the water rescue unit. The three men & one woman dive team was very respectful of the victims bodies. They put the bodies in bags under water before placing them into a boat. It was a say moment but with dignity. Thanks to our county servants for their efforts & professionalism.
