Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office investigators are trying to figure out what caused a Cumming man’s car to leave the roadway and go into a lake early Saturday morning.
According to Sgt. Chris Shelton, Traffic Specialist with the Sheriff’s Office, the victim was identified as Mark Davidson Hendley, age 47. Hendley lived on Oak Grove Valley Drive in Cumming.
Shelton’s report stated that Hendley was alone in his 2006 Kia Optima about 3:30 a.m. Saturday, and was traveling east on Riley Road when his car apparently left the road while rounding a curve. Shelton said it appeared that Hendley over-corrected and crossed over Riley Road towards the lake. His car the struck the end of a guard rail, causing the car to flip end over end two times. The car came to an uncontrolled stop on its top in the lake.
A nearby resident heard the crash and notified authorities. Hendley’s body was trapped in his car for about an hour before it was recovered by Fire Department personnel. Hendley, who was not wearing his seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene.
It is not known at this time if alcohol or drugs were contributing factors. Results of blood tests are pending.
