Boyfriend Charged with Murder in Woman’s Death

The 42 year-old boyfriend of a woman struck and killed on March 23 has now been charged with Felony Murder and 1st Degree Vehicular Homicide.

According to Lt. Col. Gene Moss, Commander of the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office Enforcement Bureau, Mark Douglas Jones of Cumming has been charged with Felony Murder, 1st Degree Vehicular Homicide, Aggravated Assault and Failure to Maintain Lane.

The incident began around 10:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 23rd, when Jones and his girlfriend, Christy Newton, were at Jones’ residence on Shiloh Road in South Forsyth County.  According to Col. Moss, a verbal altercation ensued and Newton, age 34, left the house and was walking on the shoulder of Shiloh Road.

Jones then allegedly got into his Toyota pickup truck and struck Ms. Newton with the truck.  Ms. Newton was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta where she succumbed to her injuries on Wednesday, March 26.

Jones was originally arrested at the scene of the incident and charged with Driving Under the Influence.  He was re-arrested on the new charges late Tuesday night at his residence.  He is being held without bail in the Forsyth County Jail.

Moss said that Jones’ arrest followed a detailed investigation by the Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division, the Special Victim’s Unit, Traffic Specialists and the Crime Scene Investigation Unit.
