Covenant Christian Academy’s varsity girls’ volleyball team earned their first win of the season in a tie-breaking fifth game during a match with Horizon Christian Academy. The match was held in Covenant’s gymnasium at 6905 Post Road on Thursday, September 4th. Covenant lost the first game of the match 18-25, but rallied back to win the second game 25-22.
Consistent serves from Covenant Sophomore Taylor Pierce and strong defense from Senior Leeann Vecchio and Sophomore Lydia Bailey sealed up the second game win. Covenant lost the third game 10-25, but forced a tie-breaker after winning the fourth game. Once again Taylor Pierce played a significant role in the fourth game by serving six straight serves and ending up in the serving position again at the end of the game to serve the winning point. The tie-breaker put Covenant fans on the ends of their seats as Horizon threatened to catch up near the end, butCovenant players held on to the lead and won the match 15-12.
Covenant has 15 players on this year’s varsity team. The team has five seniors, one junior, two sophomores, and seven freshmen. Coach Kathy Bailey has seen significant improvement in the individual and team skills of the girls and expects this season to be one of the most successful in school history. The varsity girls’ have thirteen more matches before the state tournament in October.
