October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and Family Haven is sponsoring a rally to help bring awareness to the Forsyth County community...
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and as the only Domestic Violence Shelter in Forsyth County, Family Haven wishes to make the public aware of a Domestic Violence Awareness Rally being held on October 13th at 11:30 a.m. outside the Courthouse in Cumming.
There will be flags posted for the victims served so far this year and several speakers will share comments, with the program lasting approximately 30 minutes.
Speakers include Lisa Burke – Director of Family Haven, Leslie Abernathy – Forsyth County Solicitor, Kim Slep – Domestic Violence Survivor, Mike Gillespie – Senior Pastor of First Christian Church in Cumming, Leslie Dinkins – Representative for Forsyth County Domestic Violence Task Force, and a nurse from Northside Hospital-Forsyth.
During Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Family Haven is reaching out to victims through businesses to let them know that help is available. The organization's goal is to educate the public about the effects of domestic violence on families and to find ways in which we can all work together to promote safety and eliminate domestic violence in our communities.
Every citizen has the ability to aid and assist those suffering from domestic violence and to let victims know that support is available through Family Haven’s emergency shelter, 24-hour hot line and outreach programs. In the past quarter-century, thousands of Americans have been murdered by a partner. Children who witness domestic violence often grow up believing that physical cruelty in relationships is acceptable behavior and thus may tend to perpetuate a cycle of violence. Domestic violence crosses all walks of life.
The intent of Domestic Violence Month is a time for collective action: for communities to unite to mourn those who have died as a result of abuse, to celebrate those who have survived, to connect those who work to end violence and to raise public awareness.
Family Haven urges all neighbors to become part of the coordinated community response to domestic violence and to send the message that this crime will not be tolerated in our County. If you are willing to help or would like more information, please call Family Haven at 770-889-6384.
