Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) has been shown to be an effective means of intervention for adults and children with pervasive developmental disorder and is one of the most widely used for the treatment of autism

Autism is a developmental disability that results from a disorder of the human central nervous system. It is diagnosed using specific criteria for impairments to social interaction, communication, interests, imagination and activities.

Autism manifests itself before the age of three years according to the World Health Organization's International Classification of Diseases.  Children with autism are marked by delays in their social interaction, language as used in social communication, or symbolic or imaginative play.

The ABA approach teaches social, motor, and verbal behaviors as well as reasoning skills.  ABA therapy is especially useful in teaching behaviors to children with autism who do not otherwise "pick up" on these behaviors on their own as other children would. ABA teaches these skills through use of careful behavioral observation and positive reinforcement or prompting to teach each step of a behavior.

Early intervention service providers have discovered how well ABA works with children with autism. Different methodologies such as Discrete Trial Teaching, Incidental Teaching, analysis of verbal behavior and many others are included in ABA.

North Georgia Autism Center, Inc. was founded in the fall of 2005 by Jessica Pugh, MS. BCBA. She has a master’s in Applied Behavior Analysis and Developmental Disabilities from Auburn University and is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). Her career started as a behavior therapist working directly with children. As her education and experience increased, responsibilities for program development and supervision of other employees were added. She saw a need for more centralized local resources in Forsyth County and North Georgia and so began the North Georgia Autism Center, Inc.
