History of the National Day of Prayer

The National Day of Prayer is a vital part of our heritage.  In 1776, the Continental Congress called for the first National Day of Prayer and Fasting. Abraham Lincoln called for an observance of such a day on nine different occasions including in 1863 when he proclaimed a day of “humiliation, fasting, and prayer.”

In 1952, a joint resolution by Congress, signed by President Harry Truman, declared a National Day of Prayer which was amended and signed by President Ronald Reagan, permanently setting the day as the first Thursday of every May.  Each year, the president signs a proclamation, encouraging all Americans to pray on this day.  Last year, all 50 governors signed similar proclamations.
