The Forsyth County Geographic Information Department invites all citizens to attend GIS Day 2008 on Friday, November 14.

Thisyear’s celebration will mark the 10th anniversary of this annual worldwide event. GIS Day will be held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Commissioners Meeting Room at the County Administration Building. This event provides an opportunity for users of geographic information systems (GIS) technology to inform their communities about the local contributions resulting from GIS technology.

“GIS is a simple and effective tool for communicating and analyzing geographic trends,” Forsyth County GIS Director John Kilgore said. “This technology provides a method for inventorying, managing and optimizing the county’s abundant natural resources as well as other resources throughout the area.”

Join Forsyth County GIS staff members as over 90 countries throughout the world celebrate GIS Day. GIS Day 2008 in Forsyth County will include a map gallery display, demonstrations, presentations, door prizes and refreshments.

“We use this day to educate the public and fellow employees about GIS,” Forsyth County GIS Specialist Mary Jo Black Enderby said. “Our main event on November 14 will have many exciting presentations about the benefits of GIS specifically in Forsyth County.”

In addition to the GIS Day event, the GIS Department will host free, half-hour training classes focusing on geographic information available for citizens at www.forsythco.com. These classes will be held Tuesday, November 18 at 2 p.m. and Wednesday, November 19 at 3:30 p.m. at the County Administration Building.

The County Administration Building is located at 110 E. Main Street in Cumming. To receive additional information regarding GIS Day and related GIS classes, email jmkilgore@forsythco.com or call 770.781.2108.
